Year 9 Music Scheme of Work

In year 9, all pupils complete the final elements of the National Curriculum in Music. Homework booklets are issued each term with tasks directly related to the classwork.

The following topics are studied in year 9:

Unit One - Spirituals and Blues: using their knowledge on the slave trade from History classes, pupils learn about worksongs and blues to compose and perform their own blues track.

Unit Two - Rock 'n' Roll: the 1950's come alive in this brief look at rock 'n' roll, with everything from Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Bill Haley and the Comets.

Unit Three - Caribbean and South American Music: salsa, tango, samba and reggae music are covered along with the life of Bob Marley.

Unit Four - Jazz and Improvisation: pupils learn about ragtime, swing, dixieland and be-bop music as well as trying to improvise themselves.

Unit Five - Musicals: the wonderful world of the musical is looked at by studying favourites such as Grease and more challenging shows such as West Side Story and Les Miserables.

Unit Six - World Music: pupils study music, instruments and cultures from various countries around the world and especially those required for GCSE Music.
